About Us

Last updated: 15 September 2026

Spark Zone is an independent reference site. We publish free calculators that answer a specific, checkable question — how much paint a room needs, what a dungeon key really costs in a game economy, how much torque a shaft will take, how many grams a ring weighs in your alloy — and we show the formula behind every answer so you can verify it yourself.

No account. No paywall. No “pro tier”. You open a calculator, enter your numbers, and get a result with the math visible.

What you will find here

Our tools are grouped by the kind of problem they solve. The largest collections are:

  • Business & trade — order quantities, shipping weights and volumes, invoicing, labour rates. See business & trade calculators.
  • Home & renovation — paint, lumber, decking, tile, insulation, electrical load sizing. See home & renovation calculators.
  • Gaming — damage per second, cooldowns, gear score, upgrade costs, resource farming rates. See gaming calculators.
  • Environment — carbon footprints, habitat area, reforestation and offset estimates. See environment calculators.
  • Agriculture — fertiliser rates, feed conversion, storage capacity, evapotranspiration. See agriculture calculators.
  • Science & engineering — torque, belt length, gas laws, frequency and wavelength. See science & engineering calculators.
  • Education and maths — z-scores, weighted grades, logarithms, ANOVA. See education calculators and math calculators.
  • Photography, technology, automotive, travel and DIY — aperture and colour temperature, subnetting and storage, fuel cost per mile, unit conversion, candle and craft ratios.
  • Everyday numbers — baking conversions, oven temperatures, pan volumes, dough and recipe ratios.

We also publish arithmetic reference calculators for cost questions such as loan interest, tax allowances and legal filing fees. Those pages are calculators, not advice: they multiply and divide the numbers you give them. Read our disclaimer before relying on any output for a decision that carries legal, financial or health consequences.

How our calculators are built and checked

Every tool on this site goes through the same four steps before it is published.

  • 1. Write the calculation out. Every tool page carries a Formula and Logic section — the equation it applies, the input units it expects and the default values it starts from. Where a calculation rests on a recognised standard, a published rate table or a handbook figure, the page names it. Where it is ordinary arithmetic or a widely used convention, the page shows the calculation itself rather than implying an authority behind it.
  • 2. Give you numbers you can reproduce. Tool pages add practical notes and the reference values they use, so you can run the same arithmetic yourself and see where your case differs from the default.
  • 3. Show the assumptions. Inputs are labelled with their units, and every tool page states the formula it uses and the defaults it assumes — so you can see whether the tool is answering your question or a slightly different one.
  • 4. Correct when something changes. Rates, allowances, thresholds and standards change. When one does, or when a reader reports an error we can reproduce, the affected page is corrected. We do not leave a number up once we know it is wrong.

Alongside the tools we write method notes — longer guides that walk through the formula, the common mistakes and the edge cases. Recent examples:

What we do not do

  • We do not give professional advice. Nothing on Spark Zone is financial, investment, tax, legal, medical or veterinary advice, and the site is not affiliated with any professional body, regulator or licensing authority.
  • We do not check your inputs. Results depend entirely on the numbers you enter. A calculator is arithmetic — it has no way of knowing whether the inputs describe your actual situation.
  • We do not claim universal reference values. Rates, allowances, thresholds, material densities and standards vary by country, by year and by context. Confirm anything consequential against the primary source — a current rate table, a manufacturer’s data sheet, or a qualified professional.
  • We do not require anything from you. No sign-up, no email, no stored results, and no selling of visitor data.

Who runs Spark Zone

Elliot Vance maintains Spark Zone. He builds and tests the calculators published on the site, writes the method notes that accompany them, and corrects a page when a rate, a standard or a reported error requires it. Corrections sent in by readers are checked against the calculation and logged by him.

Spark Zone is an independent project with no sponsor, no institutional backer and no professional licensing body behind it — which is exactly why every tool page writes out the calculation it applies rather than asking you to take a result on trust. Not every tool has an external standard behind it, and where that is the case we say so on the page instead of implying one. You can read Elliot’s full profile and article archive on the author page.

Corrections and updates

Error reports are the most useful thing you can send us. If a formula, a unit, a default or a rate table on a page is wrong, tell us through the contact page and include the page URL and the number you expected. We re-check the calculation, fix the page if the report is right, and note what changed. Every tool page states the formula and the defaults it uses, so you can re-run the arithmetic and judge the result yourself.

Start with a calculator

If you know the number you need, jump straight in: browse all calculators or use the search on the tools index. If you would rather see the reasoning first, the method notes explain the formulas in full.
